Yep the marketing rules and what works on the internet is in a constant state of flux.

Part of the reason for this is that the search engines, Google in particular, are always refining their algorithms (the logic describing what a good site is) to provide a better experience to their visitors.  This is their business and so it makes good sense that they would do this.

The problem for other marketers is that they all know that to get good traffic they need to be on the first page of results in Google, Yahoo or Bing for their main traffic keywords.

This can be a very difficult thing to do so some marketers try to take short cuts in the form of automated content, linking, and even site building.  All this usually does is to get your sites removed from the search results all together, that won’t get you any traffic.

Others give up on that entirely and try all sorts of other things to get traffic including buying it from sometimes shady sources.  If you have enough money and patience this can work for you but what do the rest of us do?

Persistently look for good locations to leave a link, look for link partners, write articles to attract visitors, post press releases, maintain a social network presence etc.

These are the daily activities of anyone who wants to build their website even if it is just for the traffic.

Why would I mention this?  If you want to self-publish you will need to understand how to market yourself and your product, your book.  You will need to keep up with what you need to be doing to attract attention online and that can be time consuming.
